ANCHORS, FENDERS, & LINES

We often times are asked, “What do I need to be prepared to raft up with my boat for the first time?”. It’s a great question, and we totally understand the nerves that come with tying up to a new group of people. That’s why we’re here to help make your first time as easy and stress-free as possible! We’ve been in your shoes before and have learned some tips and tricks along the way that we’re excited to share with you.

ANCHORS

To ensure a secure anchor, we recommend having at least 100 FEET of rope available on your anchor line and using 6’+ of chain to weigh down the nose. This will help you set your anchor firmly and avoid drifting. With these precautions, you can relax and enjoy your time at Gay Cove without worrying about your boat.

Anchors should be of a style similar to the Fluke Anchor. Mushroom anchors should be avoided if possible.

FENDERS

To protect your boat from the wake that can reach Gay Cove from the main channel of Lake Lanier, we recommend using fenders that are at least 6.5 inches by 22 inches. While there are several types of fenders available, this size or larger is best suited to handle the conditions at Gay Cove and keep your boat safe.

Most cove goers prefer fenders that are at least 8.5 inches in diameter, as this size provides optimal protection.

LINES

It is essential to pack the right gear on your boat, and one of the most critical items is docking lines, also known as mooring lines. These lines serve as a crucial link between your boat and another boat, ensuring that your vessel remains safely secured in place.

We recommend selecting lines that are at least 1/2″ in diameter and 20′ in length.

25′ length preferred by most cove goers.

To prevent the anchor rope from accidentally going all the way overboard, we recommend tying off the opposite end from the anchor to a secure spot on your boat or in your anchor locker before throwing the anchor. This will ensure that the anchor is safely secured while being deployed.
